Kahlo’s End-of-Life Pet Portrait Session

Adriana and her basset hound, Kahlo have been an inseparable pair for the last 11 years. Kahlo has been with Adriana for every vacation and Thanksgiving in that time and has been a wonderful companion. Sadly, as Adriana puts it, Kahlo is on her farewell tour after being diagnosed with an incurable heart tumor. I am so struck by Adriana’s sense of humor and deep love for Kahlo. She is clearly beloved.

End-of-life sessions are always bittersweet for me. On the one hand, I am honored and happy to photograph my clients with their pets knowing that they will cherish the images for years to come. On the other hand, it is a heartbreaking situation to enter into. But, Adriana kept her spirits up with some fun and creative ideas for our shot list, one of which involved Adriana pretending to read a book about basset hounds to Kahlo. 😆

Here are a few of the getting to know you questions that I asked Adriana…

Are there any funny stories that really illustrate your pet’s personality?

“My friends call her waddles and we equate her to eeyor or Ferdinand the bull. She mostly just likes to sit and enjoy the sun. This dog does not do cardio unless there is a bunny.”

How would you describe your pet’s personality?

“Kahlo loves loves loves meat and dried mangos. She’s so easygoing but does not listen. She mostly just wants to sit on the grass and get belly rubs.”
